What to do immediately after an accident

Four things to do before you leave the scene. Your insurer will ask about all of them.

1

Make it safe

Stop, hazards on, and get everyone out of traffic. Call 999 if anyone is hurt or the road is blocked.

2

Swap details

Names, addresses, phone numbers, registrations and insurers of every driver involved. You must stop and give your details by law.

3

Record evidence

Photos of the road and all damage. Note the time, place and weather, and get any witnesses' names and numbers.

4

Don't admit fault

Stick to the facts. Fault is decided later by the insurers, based on the evidence.

Independent non-fault accident assistance

If you're a Zego customer and another driver caused the accident, our independent team can help you get back on the road.

  • Accident assistance. Someone to talk you through what happens next, from the first call onwards.
  • Vehicle recovery. If your car can't be driven, we can arrange for it to be recovered.
  • Replacement vehicle. Where the other driver was at fault, a replacement car while yours is off the road, subject to eligibility.
  • Vehicle repairs. Repairs at an approved garage, or you can choose your own repairer.
  • Claims guidance. Plain explanations of how a non-fault claim works and what you'll need.

Eligibility. These services are for drivers who were not at fault. We'll check your situation first and explain any conditions and any agreement involved before anything is arranged. Nothing is arranged without your agreement.

If you were injured. We deal with hire and repair. The firm we pass your claim to can recommend solicitors who handle personal injury claims.

Zego accident and claims questions

What should I do immediately after a car accident?

Make the scene safe and call 999 if anyone is hurt. Exchange names, addresses, registrations and insurance details with the other drivers, take photos, note witnesses, and don't admit fault.

Can I get help after a non-fault accident?

Yes. If another driver was at fault, our independent team can arrange recovery, repairs and a replacement vehicle, subject to eligibility. Call 0333 344 7762.

What information will I need to report an accident?

Your policy number and registration, the date, time and place, what happened, the other driver's name, address, registration and insurer, photos, and any witness details.

Can I arrange a replacement vehicle?

If another driver was at fault, we may be able to arrange a replacement vehicle similar to your own while yours is off the road, subject to eligibility. Call 0333 344 7762.

What happens if another driver caused the accident?

The other driver's insurer should cover your losses. We can help you get your car repaired and keep you mobile while the claim is made against the driver at fault.

Will I lose my No Claims Bonus?

If the accident is shown not to be your fault and the other side pays, your No Claims Bonus is usually unaffected. If you were at fault, it may be affected unless you have No Claims Bonus protection.

Can I choose my own repairer?

Yes. It's your right to choose who repairs your car, although insurers may point you towards their own approved garages.

About Zego car insurance

Zego is a UK motor insurance provider that started out insuring gig-economy drivers. It now sells delivery cover (car and scooter, for platforms such as Deliveroo, Just Eat, Uber Eats and Amazon Flex), private hire taxi cover, van cover for personal, business and courier use, and private car cover including its Sense telematics product and learner driver insurance. Zego is a trading name of Extracover Limited (FCA reference 757871).

For quotes, policy details and cover, visit Zego's official website: zego.com. We don't sell Zego policies.

Zego courtesy cars and drivers who work on the road

Many Zego customers drive for a living: delivery riders and drivers, private hire drivers and van drivers. According to Zego's help centre, a Zego courtesy vehicle is only available while your vehicle is repaired by a Zego approved repairer, subject to availability, and it is for social, domestic and pleasure use only. That means it can't be used for delivery or taxi work.

Zego also says that after a non-fault accident involving another vehicle, it may refer you to a credit hire company, which can supply a replacement vehicle and recover the cost from the at-fault driver's insurer. That claim is separate from your Zego policy.

If another driver caused your accident, our independent team can explain the replacement vehicle and repair options open to you, subject to eligibility. If you drive for work, tell us when you call.
